Chiller

Chiller

The Telegraph reports that:

"Corner shops will be given public money to buy chiller cabinets so they can sell fruit and vegetables.."

Many of the corner shops that do have chiller cabinets tend to stock them with cans of lager. I do not see that this is the best/most effective use of public money.

Idiots

Idiots

Congratulations to the De Vere Oulton Hall hotel in Yorkshire for coming up with the most insulting and hair brained scheme I have ever seen a restaurant attempt.

They had plans to charge children's Sunday lunches according to the weight of youngsters. The intention was to weigh under-fifteens, and charge £1 per stone for their meal.

Completely daft, and completely insulting.

Needless to say having suffered a barrage of criticism Nigel Massey, a spokesman for De Vere, said that the plan would be reconsidered.

Idiots!

4,000 Mc Jobs

4,000 Mc Jobs

As Britain lurches into recession, the good news is that McDonald's is launching a recruitment drive to fill 4,000 new "McJobs" following strong UK growth.

Seemingly, despite government warnings about obesity and diet, McDonald's is serving an extra two million customers a month compared with last year.

I assume that people are eating more burgers etc, as a form of comfort food as the economic news worsens.

Fast Food Ban

Fast Food Ban

Planners in Los Angeles have imposed a moratorium on the opening of new fast food outlets of chains such as Burger King and KFC in South Los Angeles, in an attempt to encourage better eating habits among the area's mainly black and Hispanic population.

The full Los Angeles council is expected on Tuesday to approve the restrictions across the 32 square-mile area of the city, where fast food outlets make up 45% of restaurants.

The trouble is that fast food is only one part of the problem. Consumers need to take responsibility for how much they eat and what exercise they take. Additionally, the fast food outlets provide much needed employment in areas of poverty and deprivation.

This is not a cure all solution for the alleged obesity epidemic.

Burger Off!

Burger Off!

Proving yet again that the Olympics is about money and sponsorship, not about sport, the British Olympic Organising Committee have landed themselves in an embarrassing situation with regard to one of the sponsors (McDonald's) for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The Green Party is demanding to know how McDonald's, the burger chain, fits in with promises to promote locally grown food. It should also be noted that the British government is currently conducting a very assertive healthy eating/anti obesity campaign in the UK, as such some people could argue that to associate itself with a promoter of fast food is a tad hypocritical.

The London organising committee, needless to say, are insisting that McDonald's would not have any exclusive control over catering and would be just one of a range of outlets supplying food.

Rather laughably McDonald's is the "official restaurant" (how on earth can anyone describe McDonald's as a restaurant?) of the Games, as a result of a long-term deal with the International Olympic Committee.

Money first, health and sport second!

Restaurants May Be Sued For Making You Fat

Restaurants May Be Sued For Making You Fat

It seems that the march of the compensation culture in the USA has reached new heights of stupidity.

People are trying to sue restaurants and food outlets for serving them food that makes them fat.

Has it not occurred to these people, that if they eat too mauch and don't exercise then they will get fat?

They only have themselves to blames.

A state legislator in Pennsylvania is taking no chances, Rep. Douglas Reichley wants to add Pennsylvania to the list of states that protect the food industry from these lawsuits.

He introduced the bill last month to protect the state's agriculture and food industries, because he doesn't think that they should be sued for "making food that tastes good."

In New York two fat teenagers, clearly on the make, filed a suit against McDonald's for allegedly making them fat by serving them burgers and fries.

Pathetic!

Lower courts in New York have dismissed the case twice, but a federal appeals court reinstated part of it earlier this year.

A handful of similar suits have been thrown out since the New York case was filed in 2002 and there are no other known cases pending, legal experts said.

In the last two years, 16 states have enacted laws prohibiting such obesity lawsuits; in New Mexico, lawmakers approved a "right-to-eat-enchiladas act."

Atkins On The Wane

Atkins On The Wane

It seems that the Atkins fad, for eating protein but no carbs, may be on the wane in restaurants in the US.

The diet was as much the product of slick PR, as it was obesity. As such many restaurants, both in the US and Britain, scrambled to satisfy their customers' latest fad.

Menus were revised to include "Atkins" friendly items, or low carb meals. Fries were out, and veggies were in.

However, as with any fad, the momentum faded. The NPD Group, an independent US marketing information company, has reported that the percentage of American adults on any low carb diet in 2004 peaked at 9.1% in February 2004 and dropped to 4.9% by early November.

This means that restaurants in the US are now revising their menus again, and bringing back the carbs.

Hooray!

As with anything in the US, you can be sure that it will take hold here in the UK as well. So those of you missing your carbs, need not go hungry for much longer.
