Fed up with celebrity chefs drizzling sauces over undercooked pieces of meat? I am!

I regularly dine out and am happy to share my restaurant experiences, and musings on food with you.

Italian Night at The Dover Castle

Kudos and thanks to Chef Jason Bear and the good people of The Dover Castle for putting on an excellent Italian evening last night.

The food and atmosphere were great.

Double points to Jason for hand rolling his pasta with a rolling pin, not one of those fancy pasta rolling machines.

The Italian Evening at The Dover Castle Brighton

My heartiest congratulations, and kudos, to Chef Jason Bear and the good people of the Dover Castle Brighton, for hosting an Italian Evening last night....oh the official title was:

Italian Food For Families, Friends and Lovers

Irrespective of semantics the food, atmosphere and service were absolutely bloody brilliant.

The small plates of splendid, tasty and homemade Italian food were great. Chef Jason Bear created dishes using family recipes, and made use of a rolling pin for the homemade pasta (no poncey modern pasta machines for him!).

The food was top notch and, as far as I am concerned, the lasagne was the best I have ever had (even better than my own!). Also, by the way, the lamb neck with borlottie beans was ace. Eva was well pleased with her arancini and calamari.

Oh, and by the way, the Prosecco and sambucas lubricated our palettes nicely.

Please may we have more of these evenings!

Chef Rich Moves To The Dover Castle

Fans, such as myself, of Chef Rich's cooking (especially his chili) will be pleased to know that having left The Pub With No Name he is now in residence at The Dover Castle.

The Dover Castle (Brighton)

The Dover Castle (Brighton)

My compliments to the Dover Castle:

Eva, myself and a friend from Sweden dined there last night and had thoroughly enjoyable time and meal.

The menu specialises in fish, sourced daily from the locality, the selection on offer is written on a blackboard and as the evening wears on the dishes that run out are crossed out. Other non fish dishes are also available.

Being a "contrarian" I had the steak and chips, which was first class; the steak was tender and succulent, and the chips, onion rings, peas and tomato all ticked the right boxes taste and portion wise.

The butternut squash soup and mezze, that we also scoffed, were likewise excellent.

The selection of beers, lagers (including Asahi) and wine is decent and the staff are very friendly, easy going and service minded (eg I appreciated being offered a smaller (and cheaper) bowl of soup as a starter).

All in all a good place to have a reasonably priced, good quality meal in a friendly atmosphere.
